My lecture today was a success but was scheduled to last 2 hours. No one asked me and of course, we ended early. I was to have a master class this afternoon and even with 2 hours of waiting no one left. About 25 women gathered for the master class. Unfortunately word had not gotten out that they were suppose to bring things to share so our show and share time was short. I demonstrated my quilt-as-you-go technique which was a hit! Many jokes about the American Embassy providing aid to the quiltmakers of Kazakhstan. We are so fortunate in the U.S. There is not talk of an larger exhibition of Kazak quilts. Groups are forming. People are sharing. I am so happy. Tomorrow I teach children so it should be yet another interesting day. The snow melted and I was able to discard my coat. Spring is here and quilts are the talk of the town! Life is good. Karen

Hi Karen, Great to catch up again on your travels. Now you are in familiar territory. And I’m really happy that the Embassy people have been so helpful. It’s the usual reception for Americans traveling overseas, little known outside the U.S. Can’t wait to talk with you when you get back for even more details. Keep well and revel in your adventures. Le
have been reading your recent tales. This is way off topic, but we lost Edith, the mother of Roy’s sons yesterday. She fought the cancer, but it won.
However, I can talk, on topic, about the quilt that I made for her. Once we realized that she was very ill, I put my life on hold and made a quilt for her. I made an “old-timey” string quilt variation. I asked my friend, KW that has a long arm quilting business, if she could quilt it for me, and soon. KW was not interested in taking on a quilt that needed to be finished before the Christmas Holidays, but when I told her why I needed it, she got it back to me within two days. I was able to give the quilt to Edith when we saw her at a family gathering, on Thanksgiving Day.
I believe in the magical healing power of quilts, and know that the quilt that I gave to Edith was loved, as her sons told me that it was on her couch, and that she used it. Just wish that the magic and love and that I put into quilt had worked. KW told me that she also put love and magic into the quilt when she did her beautiful long-arm quilting.
Those of us that would rather do fun quilts that hang on the wall, should also remember to make cuddle quilts for the couch or a bed for our family members and friends.
